Spain is at the world's top with a total of 1 million hectares under vine. Castile or central Spain is a large wine producing area. Only DO La Mancha has half a million hectares of vineyards. Other smaller but significant designations of origin include Mentrida and Madrid. This area is so vast that grape varieties used are numerous. Number one red is Tempranillo, also referred to as Cencibel in Castile. Garnachas from high altitude vineyards near northwest of Madrid have recently gained much popularity because of their difference with Garnacha from other areas in Spain with milder climate. White is dominated by Airen. White Albillo Real has in recent years been recovered from near extinction. It produces wines somehow similar to Viura (Macabeo) and takes the surname of Real because it was historically drunk by the Spanish royals in and around Madrid.
